Citytrip Maastricht, Netherlands
September 2018

Day 1
Thursday, September 20th

Our citytrip starts with boarding the train bound for Utrecht at the station in The Hague. In Utrecht we do have to change trains. Once on our way to Maastricht we enjoy the ride and the changing scenery outside. Having reached Maastricht main station, again we have to change trains. The hotel where we booked a room is located on the southern outskirts of Maastricht in a part of town called Randwijck.

Rather than using the national railway we have to change to the regional network: ARRIVA. Different company, different colors! By train this takes about ten minutes. Arrived at Randwijck station the hotel is only a five minute walk.

Once at the hotel the room is immediately available to us. We bring our luggage to the room, freshen up a little and plunge straight into the charms of Maastricht. We are fortunate because the weather is on our side. It is sunny, warm and inviting and lots of people are shopping and site-seeing. This surely does contribute to the charming character of Maastricht.

Maastricht is cut in two by the Maas River. In order to reach the city centre there are six bridges, four of which are suitable for pedestrians. Walking through the borough of Randwijck we head for the Saint Servaasbridge, one of the oldest bridges in town and dating back to Roman days. Randwijck is the more artistic part of Maastricht. Here you will find many boutiques selling clothes and shops that sell modern art work.

Having crossed the bridge you walk straight into the city centre, the pounding heart of Maastricht. Shops galore. Following the ″Kleine Staat″ into the ″Grote Staat″ we reach the Vrijthof. The largest and most well known square of the city. The other one is called ″Markt″ and in its centre is located the City Hall. An impressive and beautiful building to see.

Another interesting building to visit is the shop of the Boekhandel Dominicanen, located in the Dominicanerkerkstraat. This is a modern bookshop located in a very old former church. The church is build in Gothic style and was consecrated in the year 1294. The walls are decorated with medieval fresco′s depicting Thomas of Aquino. The ceilings also are richly decorated with paintings. Definitely worth a visit! Once you are done browsing around, you can have a rest and a coffee in the coffee-corner located where the altar used to be and observe the other people browsing around.

We booked the hotel room as a bed and breakfast. It is around five in the afternoon by now and we are looking for a place to eat. Having crossed the Saint Servaasbridge to the East bank of the river we come across what looks a small but nice restaurant named Bouchon d'en Face. This proved to be an excellent choice. For a main course I had a beautiful fresh water fish (pike bass) and for dessert a chocolate cake with a runny chocolate filling.

When visiting Maastricht, when longing for a bite to eat, then pay them a visit. They open at five in the afternoon and it is defenitely worth your while. You will recieve a warm welkom.

and welcome!
