Diving at Sha′ab Claude Reef

Sha'ab Claude (or Claudio or Claudia) is another small cluster of Ergs which collectively are part of the Sha′ab Sheer reefs, as it´s known locally. Sha′ab Claude is the middle of a chain of 3 erg clusters, each around 5 - 10 minutes from the next by boat. The main erg at Sha′ab Claude has 3 to 4 smaller pinnacles very close together stretching away from it in a southwesterly direction.

There Ergs have lovely soft corals and large groups of masked butterflyfish and Red Sea bannerfish congregate here. Blue spotted rays are common and there is a channel or tunnel which is formed between the ergs and makes for an easy swim-though and some good photographs.

Diving at Abu Galawa Soghayr Reef

Abu Galawa Soghayr is a small reef which is located on the western part of Fury Shoal group. The reef itself is a small separate reef which actually has no name, but is referenced to the larger reef it is part of.

The reef is only about a 100 by 100m and not very deep, maximum depth around 17m. Galawa refers to the turquoise colour of the blue water.

At the base of the reef there is the wreck of small sailboat, which lies on its starboard side in 18m of water on a sandy sea floor. According to the guides this is an American sailboat which sank in 2002. Origins are disputed, but it is likely to have sunk in the early 80s (based on the coral growth).

The wreck is approx 16m in length and was reportedly lost due to a navigational error. The inside of the wreck is densely packed with shoals of young small fish.
