Citytrip Lisbon, Portugal
September 2016

Day 2
Tuesday, September 27th

When you have something to eat at a Portuguese restaurant, they usually put some bread on the table and some things to put on it like butter, marmalade, cheese or a sardine spread. Especially the last item on the list is particularly tasty. Yesterday we went to the nearby Pingo supermarket and searched for this spread. We obviously bought a few cans of this lovely sardine spread for at home.

The plans for today include a visit to Cascais. We therefore head out to Cais do Sodre in order to take the train. The ride to Cascais takes about an half an hour, making several stops on the way.

Arrived in Cascais we decide to have a coffee first, and stop at a local restaurant. Unfortunately there appears to be a problem with the water supplies, anything to drink that includes water is of the menu. We have to make do with canned soda (or a canned beer).

Wandering through Cascais through the Rua Frederico Arouca, we spot the Cafe Galleria House of Wonders. This restaurant is a mix of art Gallery with a Cafe where you can have a Tea or drink Wine and eat homemade food like vegetarian tapas, quiches, pies, stuffed courgettes and salads. The cafe features a rooftop hangout with sea view, up a multiple flights of steep stairs.

We enjoyed the rooftop serenity, the Mezze (vegetarian snack) and freshly made fruit juice.

Returning from Cascais we stop at the Alcântara del Mar railway station. In the quarter of Alcântara there are some interesting things to be seen. One of them being the train station itself.

Lisbon's Alcântara del Mar railway station has quite a large collection of street artworks in its underground tunnels.

The station is in a run-down area in the southwestern part of the city, close to Rio Tejo and the red 25 de Abril Bridge. This is exactly one of those areas where you shouldn't be alone when the night falls. The urban art however, makes the walls look good.

It all began in 1846 when a threads and fabrics Company moved to Alcântara. Other companies moved as well to the 23.000 m2 industrial site during the golden industrial age.

Alcântara was a busy place during that time. Then the gigantic industrial site was abandoned and fell into ruins. Since 2008, a new urban fragment has been born. The LX Factory, a giant atelier full of galleries, traditional restaurants, design shops and even concert halls. The complex has been renewed and the buildings are not falling apart anymore.

After much work the new factory was occupied by corporations, new brands, startups and wanna-be-artists. Lx Factory is now a creative mini-city.

It is late in the afternoon and we are getting hungry. We decide to have dinner in one of the many small restaurants in Alcantara nearby the LX-factory, Fonte Dos Passarinhos.

I ordered the Dourade with some Vino Verde. Fish obviously needs to swim! If you visit the Alcântara area, do not forget to eat here. Very nice!
