Citytrip 2012
Paris - France

Day 4
Wednesday, August 8

Our last day in Paris and what are we going to do next? A plan of attack is quickly made. We head for the metro station in order to go to the south part of Paris. First we stop at the shopping centre called Les Halles. Having arrived there, the centre entrance is under construction and the area is a big mess.

When we walk down the stairs into the belly of Paris it proves to be a very modern shopping mall. What it is lacking is a public and a friendly atmosphere. We do some window shopping for a little while, but it is no fun, so we leave to visit the large library called the Centre Pompidou.

The winning project, submitted by the architects Richard Rogers, Renzo Piano and Gianfranco Franchini broke with architectural conventions by moving functional elements such as escalators, water pipes and air conditioning to the outside of the building, freeing interior space for the display of art works.

The pipes and ducts are all color-coded: blue for air, green for water, red for elevators, yellow for electricity, gray for corridors and white for the building itself. The Centre Pompidou is home to one of the world's most important museums of modern art, the MNAM, but it also contains a very popular library, a bookshop, a movie theater and a panoramic terrace. The entrance is free of charge, and we went to the reading area on the first floor. Everywhere are PC's to work with and most were in use.

This being our last day in Paris and having seen and visited so much already, we are kind of tired. Having reached the Seine again we decide to have a tour across the Seine by boat. We can sit down for a while, watch the scenery go by and listen to the explanation of the tour guide while enjoying the sun over our heads. This is definitely a thing I can recommend to do.

After a refreshing boat tour across the river Seine we head for Bistrot Margueritte again for a perfect last lunch in Paris. Then it is off to the hotel, pack our things and make our way to the station Gare du Nord. We leave for the Netherlands this afternoon.

and welcome!
