Today we have booked a tour across the island by bus. Our first stop is the village of Lindos, located on the East side of the Island. Lindos is known for its acropolis and for its whitewashed houses. This ancient town is situated 45 km to the south of Rhodes Town and was founded by the Dorians in the 10th century B.C. In the 8th century, it already was a major trading center, due to its geographical position between Greece and the Middle East. However, it started to decline when the city of Rhodes was founded, in the 5th century.

When we reach Lindos the bus is parked and we begin our steep walk all the way up to the acropolis on top of the cliff overlooking the ocean. Walking through the narrow streets of Lindos we pass by many little shops that offer all sorts of tourist things and memorabilia of the acropolis. We also see some people going uphill on the back of mules. Another tourist attraction.

On the summit of the Lindos Acropolis are the temple ruins of the goddess Athena Lindia. These date back to the 4th century B.C.. According to Greek mythology, Danaus, son of the King of Egypt, founded Lindos when he was fleeing Hera and his brother who had 50 sons to whom it was planned would marry Danaus’ 50 daughters. To escape the family complications, Danaus resided with his daughters in Lindos before moving onto mainland Greece.

The sanctuary was approached by a flight of steps. After it was burnt down in 342 B.C., the present temple was built with the Propylaea (the gateways) and the monumental staircase. In the 3rd c. B.C. the cult of Zeus Polieus was introduced, although Athena remained the principal deity of the sanctuary. According to an inscription the Sanctuary of Psithyros was built close to the Temple of Athena (2nd c. A.D.).

All these ancient sites are protected by a Medieval Castle, built in the early 14th century by the Knights of St John. Two towers of the castle are well-preserved till today. Outside the castle, on the southwest side of the will, there used to be an ancient theatre. Today the only remains of it are some rows of seats and part of the auditorium.

Having spent some time on the acropolis we make our way down to the village for some lunch, before continuing our island tour.

This brings us to our next location: a rural small village on the middle of the island. And no, I do not remember the name of the village for reasons mentioned before. According to my source of information of 2019 only 50,000 live outside of the city of Rhodes in the surrounding 42 villages.

Wandering thought this small village, we learn that they still do not have electricity here. Therefore they still use a wood fired community oven for baking. We visit one of the women that make traditional carpets on an old fashion loom.

and welcome!
